Artist Statement
My work rolls out the door of a re-invigorated 1800’s general store in Pilot Mound, Minnesota, not far from my rural roots. Here is a confluence where urban culture meets the natural landscape in a realm of constant change. This place of fluctuation, where one must constantly adapt and defer to Nature’s whims, is my artistic home.
I scavenge and reclaim cast-off urbanized ephemerae and allow them to simultaneously infect and fortify my designs. Materials are selected based upon their inherent echoes of personal history and contemplative tone. The resulting narratives become a personal playlist of observations of truth, propaganda and desire in an age doubly mesmerized and trapped by current discourses of instant gratification and lackadaisical promises. These discards of society are lifted up, dusted off, polished and brought together in order to take part in a chorus that odes to a very personal world…a world where sadness is inevitable and necessary…a land where even a weed has purpose to marry the crack in a sidewalk…a place where an unexpected tragedy can become a wonderful discovery…and an existence where the essential motivation for life is life itself.
