Artist Statement
I focus on the essence of things. I like to reveal the core and the details of a subject or scene. Sometimes this is a solitary moment or even just a whisper. I explore the space between the wonders of the perceptible world and the inner world found in dreams, visions, experiences, and in the creative process itself. Most of my paintings are abstract, non-representational, and non-linear artworks. These works create imaginary places and beings within the art object. Recently, I created artwork based on the bones and vertebrae of the spine and I am currently working on a new series of paintings inspired by vessels.
The spine is a curiously wonderful structure. It is a series of bones that overlap and form amazingly beautiful shapes. The spine connotes strength and support. I am intrigued by this structure, its connection to life and the passages we experience. To me, the spine is the symbol of this universal link. In the fall of 2010, two of the paintings in this series were selected as finalists for the New Mexico Public Art Purchase Initiative.
In the vessel series I will play with line, shape, and color. I have begun with three paintings that investigate the simple shape of a vessel set in a garden. These beginning artworks are fresh, gestural paintings intentionally capturing the essence and energy of spring in the garden. To me this process is like playing the first three notes of a melody on a piano. It creates an anticipation of more to come.
